Biography
Dr. Reynaldo Martorell is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of International Nutrition at the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, Atlanta, GA (USA). He was chair of the Department of Global Health from 1977-2009. He obtained a PhD in biological anthropology from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1973. His research interests include maternal and child nutrition, child growth and development, micronutrient malnutrition, and the emergence of obesity and chronic diseases in developing countries Previously, he was a scientist at the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP; 1972-77), Associate Professor and then Professor of Nutrition, Food Research Institute, Stanford University (1977-91) and Leading Professor, Division of Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University (1991-93). He serves on the Board of Directors, Nevin Scrimshaw International Nutrition Foundation; the Executive Management Team, Food Fortification Initiative; and the Board of Trustees, Helen Keller International, among other appointments. His awards include election to the Institute of Medicine of the USA National Academy of Sciences, the Kellogg’s International Nutrition Prize from the American Society for Nutrition, the Gopalan Oration and Gold Medal Award from the Nutrition Society of India and the Carlos Slim Award for Lifetime Achievements in Research on Health.
